How to Pronounce Korean Words: Three Pillars — and How the North Differs from the South
October 19, 2026 · KoryoTalk · 6 min read
Short answer: a Korean word is read syllable by syllable — a consonant plus a vowel, sometimes with a batchim (받침, final consonant) that is fully pronounced, never silent. ㄹ is a single liquid sound between L and R. There is no word stress: every syllable carries even weight, and any transcription that highlights one syllable misleads you. The North Korean norm differs from the southern one less in sounds than in words and their initial letters: 로동자 (rodongja, "worker") in the DPRK versus 노동자 in the South, 녀자 (nyeoja, "woman") versus 여자, 렬차 (ryeolcha, "train") versus 기차.
Pillar 1. The syllable: consonant + vowel (+ batchim)
Every Korean syllable is one block: an initial consonant, a vowel below or beside it, and — in closed syllables — batchim, a consonant written underneath. One rule covers it: batchim is pronounced. Beginners stumble here because English and Russian both reduce final sounds; Korean does not.
| Word | Syllable breakdown | Reading | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 밥 | ㅂ+ㅏ+batchim ㅂ | pap | rice, a meal |
| 옷 | ㅇ+ㅗ+batchim ㅅ | ot | clothes |
| 학생 | hak (batchim ㄱ) + saeng | haksaeng | student |
| 탁자 | tak (batchim ㄱ) + ja | takjja | table |
| 우물 | u + mul (batchim ㄹ) | umul | a well |
Before a vowel, the batchim moves over to the next syllable — liaison: 옷이 sounds like "oshi", not "os-i". It is the most common sound change in live speech.
Pillar 2. ㄹ is neither L nor R
Romanization flatters the sound: ㄹ is a single liquid between L and R — the tongue tip makes one light tap. Word-initially the northern norm keeps it fully voiced, which gives northern words their signature opening sound:
| North (DPRK) | South | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 로동자 (rodongja) | 노동자 (nodongja) | worker |
| 로씨야 (Rossiya) | 러시아 (Reosia) | Russia |
| 렬차 (ryeolcha) | 기차 (gicha) | train |
| 료리 (ryori) | 요리 (yori) | cuisine, a dish |
Medially and finally ㄹ relaxes toward L: 우물 "umul", 렬차 with its "ryeol" syllable. One tap — no trill, no dark L.
Pillar 3. No stress — an even rhythm
No syllable in a Korean word stands out: 아침 "achim" (morning), 나라 "nara" (country), 동무 "dongmu" (comrade) — every syllable hits with the same force. Stressing one syllable the English way makes the word unrecognizable. Keep the rhythm flat, like a metronome.
Two rules for connected speech
The first is liaison, covered above: 옷이 "oshi". The second is tensing: in the dictionary word 식당 (sikdang, a canteen) the ㄱ before ㄷ comes out tense, closer to "sik-ttang". Both rules are identical in the North and the South — the phonology is shared; the differences live in the vocabulary.
The dictionary word 랭면 (raengmyeon, cold noodles) shows two conventions of romanization at once: the final consonant is pronounced ("raeng"), and the vowel ㅕ is rendered in Latin either as "eo" or as "yeo" — the sound is one.
The vowel ㅓ: between "o" and "aw"
There is no exact English match for ㅓ: the tongue sits as for "o" while the lips stay neutral as for "a". Northern 녀자 (nyeoja) and 학생 (haksaeng) contain the same vowel even though common transcriptions write it differently — a convention of writing, not two sounds.
How North Korean pronunciation differs from the South
The sounds are the same. The differences live in the dictionary and in initial letters:
- The North preserves initial ㄹ and ㄴ: 로동자, 로씨야, 녀자, 래일 ("tomorrow"). The South writes the same morphemes with ㅇ or ㄴ: 노동자, 러시아, 여자, 내일.
- Some meanings simply use different words: a train is 렬차 in the DPRK and 기차 in the South; a comrade is 동무, not 친구; a table is 탁자, not 책상.
- Broadcast intonation is a norm-of-delivery question: DPRK announcing keeps a flat, even pitch without the southern melodic swing.
How to train Korean word pronunciation
The ten-words-a-day plan from the basic-vocabulary article works here too: cards, repetition out loud — and, unlike plain vocabulary, you need the ear. Listen to the word and repeat it in the same even rhythm. To check how a northern word sounds and translates, use the KoryoTalk bot — it defaults to the North Korean norm.
Bottom line
Three pillars — the syllable with its batchim, the liquid ㄹ, no stress — unlock the reading of any dictionary word. Liaison and tensing settle in by themselves after a hundred listened words.
