Korean online translation: Seoul database or northern norm
October 31, 2026 · KoryoTalk · 5 min read
Short answer: nearly all online Korean translation follows the Seoul standard. The parallel corpora used to train translation engines are built from South Korean texts, so northern spellings (로동자 instead of 노동자, 녀자 instead of 여자, 콤퓨터 instead of 컴퓨터) are either "not found" or silently rewritten into their southern forms. If your source is from the DPRK, translating online is fine — but pick the tool with a test: three marker words and one politeness phrase expose a Seoul-based engine in a minute.
Why online tools translate "into Seoul Korean"
Machine translation learns from parallel corpora. For the Korean–Russian pair those corpora consist almost entirely of Republic of Korea texts: news wires, documentation, subtitles. South Korea's standard is 표준어, the standard language built on the Seoul speech area. The DPRK standard is 문화어, the Pyongyang-based cultured language; its spellings and vocabulary are thinly represented in large corpora, so a model either does not know them or treats them as typos. Hence the typical online behaviour: northern 력사 "history" is autocorrected to southern 역사, and the address form 동무 "comrade" is dropped or rendered as "friend" — formally close, historically wrong.
Two norms, one language: what actually diverges
The northern and southern standards are one language with two rulebooks. For online translation three divergences matter:
| Layer | North (문화어) | South (표준어) | What an online tool does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spellings | 로동자, 녀자, 력사, 로씨야 | 노동자, 여자, 역사, 러시아 | Rewrites northern spelling into southern |
| Vocabulary | 동무 "comrade", 콤퓨터 "computer", 택시 | 친구 "friend", 컴퓨터, 택시 | Substitutes the southern equivalent, losing the northern shade |
| Politeness | -습니다/-ㅂ니다, address form 동무 | -요, 하십시오체 | Mixes registers, the tone of the letter shifts |
A full table of marker words for both norms is in the guide "how to translate Korean to Russian".
A one-minute test for any online translator
Before trusting a tool with a northern text, run three probes. A tool that fails them is built on a southern database — for DPRK texts it works as a normalizer, not a translator.
- Spelling probe. Type 력사 "history". The tool will return "history" — but it will also rewrite the Korean word into southern 역사 or flag it as an error: northern graphics do not survive.
- Vocabulary probe. Type 콤퓨터 "computer". A Seoul-based engine will not recognise the northern loanword and will suggest rewriting it as 컴퓨터.
- Politeness probe. Type a -습니다 phrase with the address form 동무. If "comrade" disappears from the translation or turns into "friend", the database is southern and the register of the northern text is lost.
Tools that pass all three probes are rare: nearly every popular online translator is trained on the Seoul standard, which is a property of the corpus, not a quality defect.
How to translate a DPRK text online
The working order is the same four steps as for any Korean text:
- identify the source norm by its markers (initial ㄹ/ㄴ in Sino-Korean words, loanwords, the address form 동무);
- translate the anchor words with a dictionary that keeps northern equivalents as a separate layer — for example, the KoryoTalk bot;
- check politeness: northern official prose holds -습니다/-ㅂ니다 steadily, without southern -요;
- verify proper names and realities: on the north side the language is called 조선말, not by its southern name.
A step-by-step walkthrough is in "how to translate Korean to Russian"; why the big online services miss the northern norm is covered in the Google Translate and North Korean explainer.
Voice and photo in the online pipeline
Online translation is not limited to typing. The KoryoTalk bot accepts a voice message as its primary input: spoken Korean is transcribed and translated; text messages run up to 4096 characters. The workflow for photographed text is described in "translating Korean from a photo". The bot's base is 2.2 million Korean–Russian dictionary entries plus a separately collected layer of northern equivalents — so it passes the probes above by construction.
