North Korean to Russian translator: what makes it different

Short answer: translating North Korean into Russian is first of all about preserving the norm of the source. General Korean-Russian dictionaries and online services are built on the Seoul standard, so northern spellings (력사 instead of 역사, 콤퓨터 instead of 컴퓨터) are silently corrected, the address form 동무 “comrade” is lost, and DPRK lexicon (딸라 “dollar”, 강냉이 “corn”) is simply missing from the dictionary. The right translator first identifies the norm by its markers, then translates while keeping northern equivalents — otherwise a DPRK text becomes “a translation of a text that never existed”.
Why a “just Korean” translator is not enough
The northern and southern norms are one language with two standards: 문화어 in the DPRK and 표준어 in the Republic of Korea. Korean-Russian dictionary bases were built mainly from southern sources; the northern layer is thin or absent. In the DPRK → Russian direction this produces three classes of translation errors:
| In a DPRK text | What a general translator does | What the translation should be |
|---|---|---|
| 력사 “history”, 로동자 “worker” | Rewrites the spelling into southern 역사, 노동자 or fails to recognize the word | Translate the northern spelling as-is, keep the graphic norm of the source |
| 동무 “comrade” | Renders it as “friend” (친구) — the register of the era is lost | “Comrade” is a form of address, not friendship |
| 딸라 “dollar”, 강냉이 “corn”, 콤퓨터 “computer” | The words are missing from the southern base, the translation breaks or a southern word is substituted | Northern borrowings: dollar, corn, computer |
Where North Korean texts actually appear
The DPRK → Russian direction lives in concrete genres: KCNA (통신) reports and newspapers (신문), official documents and letters, signboards, films with subtitles, song lyrics and literature. Each genre has its own trap: news is dense with officialese; films carry colloquial forms; songs use poetic words that may be absent even from a northern dictionary.
A working workflow: four steps
- Identify the norm of the source. Northern markers: initial ㄹ/ㄴ in Sino-Korean words (력사, 로씨야), the address form 동무, borrowings (콤퓨터, 딸라). Full breakdown — in the hub article “North Korean language”.
- Translate the key words with a dictionary that has a northern layer. KoryoTalk’s base is 2.2 million Korean-Russian dictionary entries plus a separately collected layer of northern correspondences; the KoryoTalk bot holds 력사, 콤퓨터, 딸라, 동무 by construction.
- Check the politeness register. Official northern speech keeps -습니다/-ㅂ니다 level; mixing in southern -요 is a sign the norm was lost.
- Verify proper names. 평양 Pyongyang, 김일성종합대학 Kim Il Sung University — proper names take their established Russian renderings, not phonetic guesses.
How it differs from translating “into North Korean”
The opposite direction — Russian into North Korean — is covered in “translator into North Korean”: there the task is to build a phrase by northern grammar and lexicon.
