Korean Words with Transcription: Cyrillic Rules and a Ready Word List
October 20, 2026 · KoryoTalk · 6 min read
Short answer: a Korean word is transcribed block by block — each syllable square becomes one chunk of the transcription. No stress: every syllable carries the same weight. Final consonants are pronounced, always. ㄹ is "r" word-initially and a sound between "l" and "r" elsewhere. North Korean words additionally keep their initial "r" and "n": 로동자 "rodondja" (worker), 녀자 "njodzha" (woman), 렬차 "rjolchhkha" (train). A ready list of words with transcription and translation is below.
The syllable square is the unit of transcription
A Korean word is built from syllable squares: an initial consonant, a vowel below or beside it, and — in closed syllables — a batchim (final consonant) at the bottom of the block. Cyrillic transcription mirrors this one to one: as many squares, as many chunks. 학생 "student" is two squares: "khak" + "sen" → "khaksen". 물고기 "fish" is three: "mul" + "ko" + "gi" → "mulkogi".
First rule: do not merge the chunks. Dropping a final consonant ("khakse" instead of "khaksen") already distorts the word; the final consonant is always pronounced.
Five rules of Cyrillic transcription
| Rule | Example | Transcription |
|---|---|---|
| 1. No stress — even rhythm | 아침 | achim (never "aCHIM") |
| 2. Final consonants are pronounced | 밥, 옷 | pap, ot |
| 3. ㄹ: "r" at word start, between "l" and "r" elsewhere | 로동자, 우물 | rodondja, umul |
| 4. ㅓ is written "e" or "o" — a convention, one sound | 학생, 녀자 | khaksen, njodzha |
| 5. Aspirated ㅋ ㅌ ㅍ ㅊ — "kh, th, ph, chh" | 창문 | chhanmun |
All five rules are shared by the Northern and Southern norms: the phonology is one language's. What differ are the words and their initial letters — the next section.
Transcribing North Korean words: initial "r" and "n"
The Northern norm kept the historical initial ㄹ and ㄴ where the South replaced them with ㅇ or ㄴ. In Cyrillic this is immediately audible:
| DPRK | Transcription | South | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 로동자 | rodondja | 노동자 (nodondja) | worker |
| 로씨야 | rossija | 러시아 (rosija) | Russia |
| 녀자 | njodzha | 여자 (jodzha) | woman |
| 렬차 | rjolchhkha | 기차 (kichhkha) | train |
| 랭장고 | rendzjango | 냉장고 (nendzjango) | refrigerator |
If a transcription starts with "r" or the syllable "njo/nje/nju" — you are most likely looking at a Northern word or a borrowing in Northern spelling.

Loanwords: transcription follows the letters
Foreign words in the DPRK are spelled and transcribed their own way — by the letters, not by habit: 텔레비죤 "thellebijchon" (television), 콤퓨터 "komphyutkho" (computer). The diphthong ㅠ reads "ju", ㅍ reads "ph", and the transcription mirrors the Korean sound, not the donor language. The same principle as with native words: transcription follows the syllable squares.
How to practice with the list
The series' scheme works here too: 10 words a day, a card — "word + transcription + meaning", reading aloud in an even rhythm with no stresses. Read chunk by chunk first ("mul-ko-gi"), then the whole word ("mulkogi"). Check a Northern word, its sound and translation in the KoryoTalk bot — the translator defaults to the Northern norm.
Conclusion
Cyrillic transcription of a Korean word is a block-by-block record with no stress: the five rules above cover the reading of any word; the rest is practice with the list. Fact-check: the words of the list and tables — 사람, 동무, 학생, 나라, 집, 탁자, 창문, 우물, 밥, 우유, 물고기, 아침, 안녕하십니까, 감사합니다, 먹다, 마시다, 좋다, 얼마, 조선말, 렬차, 로동자, 로씨야, 녀자, 랭장고, 텔레비죤, 콤퓨터, 받침, 옷 — verified against the KoryoTalk dictionary base; transcriptions are consistent with the series' published articles. Southern 노동자, 러시아, 여자, 기차, 냉장고 are counter-examples, absent from the Northern dictionary.
